Thankful Week Day 6: Music

Music holds the glue of life together.  Without music, I would be a completely different person.  I have had the benefit of being able to sing in addition with playing the piano and the violin.  I went through elementary, middle, and high school participating in a lot of different musical adventures.  I sang in a choir all four years of high school....we sang everything from Silent Night to America the Beautiful. And then I played violin all four years--everything from Pirates of the Caribbean to West Side Story to New World Symphony.

As I went through high school--music on the radio was a central part of my life.  As social network became a bigger deal--Pandora became an essential part of all college studying days.  It has also become a central part of my grading routine now.

I am excited to now spend the next week singing my heart out as I prepare to participation in the Uintah Basin Orchestra and Chorus concert.  If you live in the Basin--please come see us and support us!!! This is our inaugural concert and I hope that you will be as blown away as I am!!

Day 29: My Life in Music

Today's prompt for the Blog Every day in May challenge asks me to share five songs that bring back memories or speak to me. My two sisters do a lot of song stuff on their blogs..it is a lot of fun to do this so here we go!

My number one favorite song right now is Kelly Clarkson's What Doesn't Kill You.  Yes it is a lot of people's favorite song but it speaks to me in a variety of ways each day--I can survive work, I can survive this mystery illness, etc.

Number two on the song list is Don't Forget Me from Smash...I love this song--I can't really put my finger on it but it is just really speaking to me just now.

Number three is a memory: Over My Head from The Fray.  This always reminds me of sophomore year of college...at that time was the first time I felt in over my head in my life....if only I could go tell myself that its nothing--it will get worse :P

Number four is another memory...our first dance song, the Luckiest from Ben Folds.

Last song...At Last by Etta James.  This was the prom theme my Senior Year and this song always takes me back to high school

V is for a Very Random List of Things

So....I'm still taking some great pain meds and I went to work for the first time today.  It was a part day but I am still pretty tired and worn out.  I might have pushed it a little bit too much today but the drugs I came home to take have done wonders!  So my brain is having a little bit of trouble focusing.  I want to go to sleep but I can't come up with a great post--so today is lame I'm sorry!  Here is the top three things I thought of that went great with V.

3. The Velveteen Rabbit....a cute cute story that every child should really read. It is a serious classic.
You can actually go read it here: http://digital.library.upenn.edu/women/williams/rabbit/rabbit.html
2. Viva La Vida by Coldplay....one of my all time favorite songs.  And even though Ben Folds said this was pitchy....I love it partly because of what Noteworthy did with it on the Sing-Off

Coldplay by Viva La Vida on Grooveshark

1.  Violin--I play...kind of.  I need to get back into the city orchestra...one day when I have time :)

Sad..I don't have a photo of me playing on my computer--they do exist but I guess not here....oh well.  Thanks for reading my sad post though :)

J is for Joel, like Billy Joel

Time to share another lesson plan idea! Though I can't take full credit it for it....I stole and combined.    With April being National Poetry Month, I have been trying to bring poetry into not just my English classes more but also my Social Studies classes as well. What a perfect way to do that than with a song like We Didn't Start the Fire.  How many history teachers love the fact that it is a whole list of historical events (even if they might not be really historically significant in everyone's mind).

This week, in U.S. History and Government we started a project that asks the students to figure out what all of the events/people are in the song.  In preparing this lesson I learned that Billy Joel actually wanted to be a history teacher at one point and was shocked when someone told him that nothing happened in the 1950s. So he wrote a song (If you believe Wikipedia that is).  I also learned while preparing this is that he actually does it in order by year through the 1950s and 60s. A great place for the lyrics is here because it has the years listed.  If you watch the music video that Joel made it is really kind of random and the kids won't fully appreciate the song...so I actually show this historical based video.

So what did we actually do? I passed out the lyrics with a bit of an introduction and we watched the video.  Then as influenced by this facts list I split the students into groups and split the lyrics into sections.  Each group researched what each person/event was.  Later on we will write our own lyrics to the song for present day as influenced by this site.

I was a little bit worried about what the kids would say...it is an old song and maybe not readily appreciated.  But they actually thought it was pretty cool and enjoyed the scavenger hunt idea of it.  And they actually asked if they could come up with their own and were pleased that eventually we would.

Happy Easter!

Today is a short little post since it is a double holiday for me....Easter happens to fall on my birthday and yesterday Brian surprised me with tickets to a Vocal Point concert.  As is typical for Vocal Point--they sing a few spiritual numbers and they did a rendition of "I Need Thee Every Hour" that I hadn't heard before.  I found this recording of it on YouTube.

This song just seemed to really fit the Easter season.  I have been learning a lot about how much I need my Savior more and more, especially for the simple things in life.  By calling on His strength, we can learn so much about life and ourselves.

On a more fun note...this was def one of my favorite songs too...

Anyway....it has been a great weekend--Happy Easter everyone!!

How Are You?

We, as a society, seem to ask this question of people a lot.   A lot of us use the phrase..."I'm fine." But do we mean.....

You can trade nervous for neurotic too
I have also heard, "I'm good" or "I'm alright"....but the person isn't actually any of these things....we don't want to start the big conversation or get into the nitty-gritty of our personal lives with people.

I happened to have Pandora on in the background today ...and before you say it....yes I have hear of Spotify but personally if it ain't broke don't fix it...and this song came up

These Days by Rascal Flatts on Grooveshark

The end of the first verse and the chorus stuck out to me today:

Yeah, life throws you curves
But you've learned to swerve
Me, I swung and I missed
And the next thing ya know, I'm reminiscing
Dreaming old dreams, wishing old wishes
Like you would be back again

I wake up and teardrops that fall down like rain
I put on that old song we danced to and then
I head off into my job, guess not much has changed

Punch the clock, head for home
Check the phone, just in case
Go to bed, dream of you
That's what I'm doin' these days
Yeah, that's what I'm doin'

So have you learned to swerve?  Or are you constantly swinging and missing? Or are you living in the past and wishing life would go back to the way it was?  Does life seem like it is on a constant loop like not much has changed? Hmm...then maybe we aren't so "good" and more like "fine".

Singing + TV Shows= Relaxing for Me

So....I really have liked musicals my whole life---then this big thing called Glee came along....and the NBC had to answer with Smash.  Smash is honestly AWESOME...but today's post is really all about Glee.  I am not feeling 100% so I am taking it easy tonight trying to relax and rest so that I don't get sick sick.  So I watched last week's episode....ironically while it taped this week's. Now...as my sisters would say--Don't Judge!!!  But I really like the music--the storyline usually leaves something to be desired...but they really do know how to sing!

This episode--though full of plenty of high school drama--had two great group numbers--and they haven't had some good group numbers in a while.  So I wanted to share :)

Also I want to proclaim from the rooftops--SING-OFF IS COMING BACK!!!! So excited!!!

It is close...I don't know which one I like better!

And now...I will post this and go watch an episode of Smash before bed.
