Q is for Quotes

I completely forgot to post last night!! I suppose this is what I get for not having everything scheduled ahead of time :(  But my catch-up post for yesterday was going to be about quotes---still great for a Sunday today.

President Uchtdorf said this in one of my favorite talks from this past conference.  And I loved this little handout someone made.

I thought that these two quotes were very appropriate on this Easter Sunday
"It is a fundamental truth that through the Atonement of Jesus Christ, we can be cleansed." –Elder Richard G. Scott

"The miracle of the Atonement can make up for imperfections in our performance." #ldsconf #BishopStevenson

And a great reminder at any hard time!!!

I'll need to remember this

L is for Latter-day Saints

In the spirit of catching up, I have wanted to do a Sunday feature on this blog for the past few months.  Yeah, it isn't Sunday but I thought I would share what I wanted this feature to be.  I wanted to share some quotes and ideas of what I have learned spiritually over the course of the week.  These might be scriptures, quotes from the prophets or the Church magazines, and they might just be random thoughts that have run through my head. I thought today with it being L, doing LDS would be a good choice to help me catch up a bit of the thoughts I have had and the quotes that I wanted to share.

Before I get too far, I wanted to talk a little about LDS. LDS stands for Latter-day Saints.  It is a quick acronym people use because we are lazy.  But I belong to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.  By latter-day, it shows that we are apart of the same Church that Christ established during his ministry, just we belong to it in this day too.

We believe that God speaks through his prophets to us on this earth right now. As members of the Church, we participate in General Conference which allows the prophets to instruct us in what we need to hear.  We just got done with General Conference on the first weekend in April, and we won't have another session until October.  However, in between we are encouraged to read and ponder the messages received at the last conference and any other conferences previously.  I have become very fond of one particular speaker, Dieter F. Uchtdorf.

This is President Uchtdorf
President Uchtdorf is in the presiding body of the Church called the First Presidency. He is a sweet man from Germany-his accent is great.  And he says things that I usually need to hear.  I have been really studying two of his talks the last few months and I want to share a quote from each (which is going to be hard because there are soo many!).

In the October conference he gave a talk called, "You Can Do it Now!" In it he said:
Stand tall and walk in the light of the restored gospel of Jesus Christ! You are stronger than you realize. You are more capable than you can imagine. You can do it now!
I loved this because life can be really hard sometimes.  But I know that I can make it through with the Savior by my side.

The other talk was from October 2011 called, "You Matter to Him".  In this talk he reminded me how much my Heavenly Father loves me.  He said:
My dear brothers and sisters, it may be true that man is nothing in comparison to the greatness of the universe. At times we may even feel insignificant, invisible, alone, or forgotten. But always remember—you matter to Him!
The power in which he says those words just reaffirms to my soul how much my Heavenly Father does love me.

I am grateful to be a Latter-day Saint because I can receive the guidance and direction I need to help me through life's hardest challenges.

E is for Empowered

One thing that I have been wanting to catch-up on with this blog is my quotes.  I know that sometimes during my 365 project, this was what I used on nights that I couldn't think of a thing to write about.  And honestly....I kind of was thinking that when I realized I didn't have a word for E.  I started thinking that quotes empower us.  That is why I love quotes so much (as evidenced by my Pinterest board).  Today I have been watching the General Conference of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.  As a result, a lot of great quotes have been sticking out to me.  Those of you that aren't familiar with conference, think of it as a great weekend to be taught by smart men and women. Some people this time have been comparing it to TED talks....and I'm like yeah that's totally true! So today, I will share some quotes that I have loved recently. And give you my little commentaries as always :P

This one was from today. I LOVED this quote.  As women, we often try to make sure that we get what we need to done--she only gave us three things.  We can do that!

We almost certainly will fail—at least in the short term. But rather than be discouraged, we can be empowered because this understanding removes the pressure of being perfect right now. — Dieter F. Uchtdorf

This is the quote that actually inspired the word empowered. This is a great quote to remember because with it I can remember that I don't have to do EVERYTHING I don't have to be perfect.  I just need to do my best and in so doing I am empowered to become a better person.

I saw this one recently and I just loved it.  I am always looking for great quotes about trying.  This one is great. Especially for my students.

General Conference Part 2

Today was another great day of General Conference.  President Monson said in his talk this morning that this session was the most spiritually uplifting that he has ever been to.  Considering he is celebrating his 50 year anniversary of being a general authority that is saying a lot.  But I wholeheartedly agree!  Ever single talk in this morning's session was a serious favorite.  I was thinking as the session ended, "I am going to have a lot of trouble writing my blog post with just one speaker as a favorite."  But now that I'm sitting here writing..what's wrong with telling you why I liked everyone's talks?

Henry B. Eyring- He spoke about what choices will lead us to happiness. I loved this talk, because I feel like it is what I needed to hear this weekend.  Some days it is hard to put one foot in front of the other, but if I remember that I am working toward eternal life then it can get easier.  And if I remember to love my Heavenly Father, that will get me through.

Dallin H. Oaks- His talk really tied into President Eyring's in the fact that he said this: "Our ultimate priority should be to love the Lord."  He continued with talking about how the Plan of Happiness is for everyone, and I loved this quote too.
"Our understanding of God's plan and His doctrine gives us an eternal perspective." –Elder Dallin H. Oaks

Bonnie L. Oscarson- As the newly called Young Women General President, I was excited to hear her speak.  She talked about how conversion comes through living righteous lives.  I love how she reminded us that no one can be converted for you--we have to gain our own testimony.  The biggest way to gain our own testimony is to exercise faith and act on the commandments. She explained it so simply, it was great.

Richard J. Maynes- I can't wait to go back and re-read his talk because he had so many great analogies.  I loved how his really brought home the fact that we need our testimonies to have endurance and spiritual stamina.  We have to be in gospel shape, just like our physical bodies need to be in shape.

Richard G. Scott- He always seems to talk about the Atonement, and today was no exception.  My favorite take away quote from his talk was that "The Atonement brings personal strength to the children of God." But at the end he threw another great idea in there--which was to fill your life with service because Satan's temptations will lose their power as a result. How cool is that?!

Thomas S. Monson- As always, the great storyteller reminding us that our testimony, patience, and endurance can see us through trials.

"Whether it is the best of times or the worst of times, He is with us. He has promised that this will never change." –President Thomas S. Monson

This is my favorite Pinterest quote from this session for sure--as I continue to wonder if and when my pain will ever go away...I need this reminder that my Heavenly Father is always there for me and that won't ever go away.

The last session of conference is always bittersweet for me.  This session brought more great talks, but I think my favorite talks from this session were Neil L. Anderson's and David M. McConkie's.  Elder Anderson reminded all of the Church how important women are and how essential the priesthood is no matter our circumstances.  A lot of people have been talking about the "ordain women" movement, and the brethren really have heard it and I think tried to address it but Elder Anderson's was the most direct to me. And I loved this quote from him because it reminds us that we are all needed.

“As men and women, sisters and brothers, sons and daughters of God, we move forward together.” –Elder Neil L. Andersen
http://www.pinterest.com/pin/128915608057077649/
Finally, Brother McConkie spoke about the power of a teacher in the Church. The thing that stood out to me the most was the need to be spiritually prepared, not just prepared with my lesson.  It made so much sense the way that he explained how if we are prepared, the lesson will be more meaningful to the students.

Overall, another great day of Conference and I am sad it is over.  Back to the daily grind of tomorrow :)

General Conference Part 1

So this weekend, millions of members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, gather together in Church buildings, homes, etc. to listen to the words of our leaders that we believe are prophets, seers, and revelators.  It is an amazing weekend of instruction.  There are five sessions that are two hours each that always seem to go so fast!  Today and tomorrow it will be my whole day, and it is a great weekend.

One of the things that is cool for me this time around is the Pinterest quotes, Twitter feeds, Facebook posts that the Church is doing.  After each session, I have been going to this site after each session to grab favorite quotes all day long. I have been retweeting stuff and pinning stuff all day long! I wanted to share with you guys a couple of my favorite quotes and impressions. So of the three sessions of conference today, I wanted to share a quote from each and why they stuck out to me.

“Doubt your doubts before you doubt your faith.” –President Dieter F. Uchtdorf
http://www.pinterest.com/pin/128915608057070079/
President Uchdorf is an amazing speaker. He often speaks in clear ways and in his talk this morning he discussed why we join the Church that we do.  Not only do we ask that of people around us through missionaries but we need to ask this of ourselves on a regular basis.  People have their agency to choose the Church or not and some do leave.  Often times we doubt our reasons to have faith, which is why I love this quote.

“Above all, never lose faith in your Father in Heaven, who loves you more than you can comprehend.” –Elder Jeffrey R. Holland
http://www.pinterest.com/pin/128915608057071334/
Elder Holland is always one of my favorite speakers, along with many around the world.  Everyone waits to see what he will say this time because it is always so powerful.  This time he decided to talk about those with depression.  He recognizes that this is a hard thing to go through as people.  As I listened I wrote down "Never loose faith" really big in my notebook with three lines underneath it--because it is so important when going through these hard times.  Our Heavenly Father really does love us.

“If we hold tightly to the word of God, we will remain on the pathway to eternal life.” –Elder L. Tom Perry
http://www.pinterest.com/pin/128915608057072570/
Tonight, there were a lot of great moments....but I loved this image along with the quote.  Together as husband and wife we need to be reading the word of God and move forward together towards eternal life. Returning to live with our Heavenly Father and our families really is our goal--and we need to hold on tight to that...it is so important to keep this eternal perspective!

Talk a Day Challenge: Stand Ye In Holy Places

Even though this is like the middle of the month, I started the TOFW Challenge: Rise Higher last week.  I mentioned in last week's post that I do better when I have some accountability, so I tell all of you guys how I did this week :).  I started with the Young Women broadcast from conference.  Even though I'm in Young Women's I hadn't had a chance to hear the conference or read it yet-sad but true.  So I wanted to make this one a priority.

However, this week did not go as well as I had hoped.  I read all three presidency's messages--Sunday, Monday, and Tuesday.  Then Wednesday came with a thirteen hour busy day and I came home and pretty much went to bed.  Thursday I was so tired from the day before still that I didn't read either.  This weekend we were out of town so going to bed late and ugh....still didn't read.  So I was three for seven this week. This week is shaping up to be just as busy if not more, so we'll hope that I can do at least one a day.

But I wanted to talk a little bit about something that I learned this week. With it being the YW broadcast it is all about the theme: "Stand Ye in Holy Places".  These women did a great job defining what a holy place is--specially when and where we can feel the Spirit.  The biggest thing that I thought of this week is that we really need to think about where/when we have experienced a holy place/moment and write that down. These memories can help us out in hard times. This goes along with what Elder Scott said in one conference talk--writing down when you feel the Spirit.  We need to recognize those moments so that we can recognize them when we need them.  We can also create our holy places a lot better when we know what need to create them.  So I invite you to think about where/when was the last holy place you were in?

It was great to learn from these women this week

G is for General Conference

Getting back on the A to Z Challenge today...with the letter G.  This weekend I had the opportunity to participate in the 183rd Annual General Conference for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. For those of my readers/visitors that are not aware, this is an opportunity for the leaders of our Church to instruct us all weekend long.  It is a spiritual feast even if you don't believe in what I do...you can appreciate being able to be instructed in what you believe in for 2 hour periods twice a day in a weekend.  Today I will do my favorite parts of each session.

Saturday Morning Session
Memory: I got to be at the Conference Center for this session.  So that was awesome! It was great to hang out with cousin Thomas!
My favorite speaker: This session was a tie between Sister Dalton and Bishop Davies.  Sister Dalton talked about the power of women and Bishop Davies talked about the strength that comes from a sure foundation in the gospel.  Both were what I needed!!

Saturday Afternoon Session
Memory: Cuddling with my nephew Evan--he did such a nice job staying quiet for everyone to be able to hear.
My favorite speaker: Elder Cook talked about finding peace in this time...another thing that is really need!

Sunday Morning Session
Memory: President Monson...he put Vivian Park on fire!!
My favorite speaker:  But really President Monson was my favorite speaker because his talk reminded me that obedience is the thing that I really need to focus on.

Sunday Afternoon Session
Memory: A very hungry Avi and "Stuff a turkey through its beak!"
My favorite speaker: That quote came from Elder Holland--all about believing!!

The Conference Center!
